What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows charities like ours to reclaim the basic rate of tax on donations made by UK taxpayers. That means:
If you donate £10, we can claim an extra £2.50, making your gift worth £12.50.
If you donate goods for sale in our charity shops, we can claim Gift Aid on the amount we sell your items for!
It all adds up, helping us rescue, rehabilitate and rehome even more animals in need across Devon.
Who Can Use Gift Aid?
You can use Gift Aid if you:
Are a UK taxpayer
Pay enough Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax to cover the amount we claim back (you don’t need to be employed)
Fill out a simple Gift Aid declaration form
Important: If you stop being a taxpayer or your circumstances change, just let us know.
How to Add Gift Aid to Your Donations
For Monetary Donations:
Whether you donate online, by post or in person, simply tick the Gift Aid box or complete our short form.
For Donated Goods (to sell in our shops):
When you drop off items at one of our shops, ask to sign up for Gift Aid. We’ll give you a donor number and track what your donations raise—so we can claim Gift Aid on the sales!

What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a government scheme which allows charities like RSPCA Little Valley Animal Shelter to claim an extra 25p from HMRC for every £1 donated by a UK taxpayer, at no extra cost to you.
It is one of the simplest ways to make your donation go even further and help support the animals in our care.
Does Gift Aid cost me anything?
No. Gift Aid does not cost you anything extra.
If you are a UK taxpayer and eligible for Gift Aid, the government gives the charity an additional 25% based on the tax you have already paid.
For example:
- A £10 donation becomes £12.50
- A £20 donation becomes £25
- A £100 donation becomes £125
Who can sign up for Gift Aid?
You can sign up for Gift Aid if:
- You are a UK taxpayer
- You pay enough Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax in the current tax year to cover the amount charities will reclaim on your donations
This includes donations made personally and not on behalf of a company.
What taxes count towards Gift Aid?
The following taxes count:
- Income Tax
- Capital Gains Tax
Council Tax and VAT do not count towards Gift Aid eligibility.
What if I do not pay enough tax?
If you do not pay enough tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed on your donations, HMRC may ask you to pay the difference.
If your circumstances change and you are no longer eligible, simply let us know.
Can I Gift Aid past donations?
Yes. In many cases, you can allow us to claim Gift Aid on donations you have made over the previous four years, provided you were eligible during that time.
Can I cancel Gift Aid later?
Absolutely.
You can cancel your Gift Aid declaration at any time by contacting us.
What types of donations qualify for Gift Aid?
Gift Aid can usually be claimed on:
- One-off donations
- Regular donations
- Online donations
- Sponsorship donations
- Membership donations, where applicable
Gift Aid generally cannot be claimed on:
- Donations made on behalf of someone else
- Payments for goods or services
- Company donations
- Charity shop purchases
Can Gift Aid be claimed on charity shop donations?
Yes, in some cases.
If you donate items to one of our charity shops and sign up to our Retail Gift Aid scheme, we may be able to claim Gift Aid on the proceeds from the sale of your donated goods.

How does Gift Aid help RSPCA Little Valley?
Gift Aid provides vital additional income which helps us care for neglected, abandoned, abused and unwanted animals across Devon.
The extra money raised through Gift Aid helps support:
- Veterinary treatment
- Food and enrichment
- Kennel and cattery care
- Rescue and rehabilitation work
- Preventative welfare and outreach work
- Improvements to our shelter facilities
Quite simply, Gift Aid helps us do more for animals without costing our supporters anything extra.
How do I sign up for Gift Aid?
Signing up is quick and simple.
You will usually just need to complete a short Gift Aid declaration confirming that:
- You are a UK taxpayer
- You want us to claim Gift Aid on your donations
