Wildlife

Encountered injured or orphaned wildlife?

For the safety and well-being of the animals and our facilities, please refrain from bringing wildlife directly to the Shelter without prior arrangement, as we do not have an on-site veterinarian.

If you come across injured or orphaned wildlife, here’s what you can do:

  • Assess the Situation: Evaluate the condition of the animal. If it’s injured or in distress, proceed with caution.
  • Contact a Professional: Reach out to a local veterinarian or wildlife rehabilitator for guidance on how to handle the situation appropriately. They have the expertise and resources to provide the necessary care.
  • Handle with Care: If you must handle the animal, take precautions to avoid bites, scratches, or other injuries. Use gloves or a towel to safely transport the animal, if necessary.
  • Transport Safely: Utilize a box or suitable carrier to transport the animal. Line the carrier with blankets to make it comfortable, and cover the box or cage to keep the animal calm during transport. Alternatively, use old newspaper (without staples) for lining.
  • Seek Medical Attention: In case of any injuries to yourself, seek medical attention promptly. This is especially important to prevent infections such as tetanus or rabies. However, please note that this is a precautionary measure. For minor injuries, administer first aid using antiseptic and plasters.

Additionally, please be mindful of the potential for cross-infection, including diseases like avian flu, which could pose a risk to our healthy animals at the shelter.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in ensuring the well-being of all animals.
