Rescued from a life of neglect alongside his elderly dog companion, Sox has spent the last few months rebuilding his confidence at Little Valley. Now, this bright, sensitive young dog is ready to find the loving home he’s waited so patiently for.
When RSPCA Inspector Alan Barnes entered the property, he found it in a state of disrepair – cluttered, unhygienic, and unfit for animals. Inside were two dogs: Sox, a young Labrador-Staffie cross, and Toby, a 13-year-old deaf dog.
Alan was able to reach their owner, who was facing significant mental health challenges. Acknowledging that he could no longer care for the dogs, he made the responsible choice
to sign them over to RSPCA care.
It quickly became clear that Sox was energetic and curious, while Toby preferred a quieter life. To give them the best chance at happiness, we made the decision to rehome them separately. Toby soon found a loving retirement home, where he spent his final months surrounded by care and kindness. When his health declined, he passed away peacefully, with his favourite people by his side.
Sox, while clever and eager to please, had limited experience with the world. New situations often overwhelmed him. With consistent, patient training, he’s learned to navigate daily life, meeting new people and dogs, handling vet visits, and exploring new environments. Regular overnight stays with a dedicated volunteer have also given him much-needed breaks from kennel life.
Animal Care Assistant Jodie (one of Sox’s key handlers – along with fellow ACA Lizzy Wayne), talks about Sox’s progress; “This boy has come such a long way,” she says. “At first, he didn’t trust anyone. He was scared of simple things – being touched, seeing another dog. Now he’s cheeky, responsive, and eager to learn. He still has his challenges, but the progress he’s made is incredible. I’m so proud of him.”
Sox is now ready for his next chapter. He’s looking for an experienced and understanding home someone who can match his energy and continue supporting his growth. We can’t wait to see this wonderful dog finally get the happy ending he deserves.

A Golden Goodbye for Toby
Toby, a gentle old soul and loyal friend to Sox, spent his final chapter surrounded by warmth, love, and dignity thanks to the kindness of Mr and Mrs Martin, who fostered him under our Golden Oldies Scheme. While Sox still waits patiently for a home of his own, Toby was able to enjoy many happy months in comfort, thanks to this special programme that supports older dogs with their medical costs and ongoing treatment.
Despite his age and health issues, Toby thrived in foster care. He enjoyed gentle walks, soft beds, and all the affection he could wish for. When the time came, and under veterinary guidance, the kindest decision was made to let him go peacefully, just shy of his 14th birthday.
We are incredibly grateful to Mr and Mrs Martin for giving Toby the love and comfort he deserved. His story is a touching reminder that we never give up on the dogs who need us most – no matter their age or health.
