At Little Valley, our Small Animal Unit is a hidden gem filled with animals brimming with personality.
From soft-furred rats like Ron, Hedwig, and Dobby to budgies Hazelnut and Pecan, playful ferrets Otis and Odin, and even the occasional duck or chicken, there’s a whole world beyond cats and dogs waiting to be discovered.
Every year, we care for and rehome hundreds of small animals. Yet, many people still turn to pet shops instead of considering adoption.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a dog or a mouse—every animal here gets the same level of care and attention. They all deserve the chance to find loving homes.”
says one of our animal care assistants, Leah.
Long Stays, Big Hearts
Some of our residents stay with us far longer than we’d like. Soft-furred rats, like Ron and his friends, have been waiting for months, as have Otis and Odin (below), two lively and intelligent ferrets who love to play and explore. Despite their long wait, they continue to charm staff and volunteers with their unique personalities.
“Ferrets are incredibly clever and entertaining pets, but people don’t always know what amazing companions they can be,” says Scarlett, another animal care assistant. “We hope more people will consider giving them a chance.”
By adopting from us, you’re giving these animals a second chance at life, offering them love and comfort they might never have known.
Adopt, Don’t Shop
Every animal that leaves our shelter has been health-checked, neutered, and matched to the right home. Choosing adoption means you’re supporting ethical pet ownership and standing against commercial breeding. Why buy from a pet shop when animals like Luna, Hermione, and Lily, three sweet soft-furred rats, are waiting for their forever families?
Building for the Future
We’re also investing in the future of our small animals. This summer, we’ll begin rebuilding our rabbitry, a state-of-the-art facility we’re calling ‘The Warren’. The demand for rehoming rabbits has never been higher, and this new space will provide a better environment for them while they wait for their perfect homes.
“The Warren will make such a difference – not just for the rabbits, but for the people who come to meet them. We’re so excited to see it come to life,” explains Vicky from the small animals team.
The new facility will also have a dedicated area for Guinea Pigs, ensuring they too have a comfortable and enriched environment while in our care.
Find Your Perfect Match
Adopting a small animal is incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s a trio of chirpy budgies, a pair of playful ferrets, or a snuggly rabbit, these animals are ready to bring joy to your home. Yoda and Chewy (above), two parakeets who recently found their forever family, are proof of the happy endings we strive for.
If you’re looking for a small pet with a big personality, we’d love to introduce you to our residents. Come and visit, and you might just find the companion you’ve been waiting for – and who’s been waiting for you.
