When Donnie was first found by our Animal Welfare Officer, Millie, he was a ghost of a cat — a smoky grey shadow flitting in and out of a garden shed, too nervous to let anyone near. He’d been straying for a long time, relying on the kindness of a local resident who left out food, but it was clear he needed help.
That’s where Millie stepped in. With time, patience, and a gentle touch, she was able to trap Donnie and bring him safely into Little Valley. He arrived with sore, dirty ears and dental issues that needed urgent attention, but we knew there was a sweet soul beneath the rough exterior.
After treatment and plenty of TLC, Donnie was placed into a foster home with Sharon, who opened her heart and home to this shy boy. What followed was a beautiful story of trust, healing, and transformation, in Sharon’s words:
“Basically I spent a week leaving him in the spare room with the door open, just letting him be. Then a week sitting with him in there, quietly. After that, we spent two weeks in my bedroom. I’d eat dinner there, watch my iPad, just letting him come to me on his own terms.
Gradually, he started coming into my room in the mornings, and I used treats to coax him downstairs. From there, I just gave him space and time.
Now? He’s my little shadow. Every evening, he curls up on my lap. At night, he goes out to explore, but every morning, like clockwork, he wakes me at 6:45 with a wet kiss on the cheek, rubbing his head all over mine and walking across my pillow.
He is the most loving and affectionate cat I’ve ever had.”
Donnie’s journey from a nervous stray to a confident, cuddly companion is exactly why we do what we do. While he’s still receiving support for some ongoing medical needs, Sharon’s dedication and care have made a world of difference.
We’re so proud of the progress Donnie has made — and so grateful to Sharon for giving him the patience, space and love he needed to thrive.
